Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas (GHG) responsible for climate change. However, small compounds such as methane, nitrous oxide, halocarbons, and ozone are also very important drivers of a changing climate. Controlling emissions, and hence the atrmospheric burden of these compounds, may play a pivotal role in near-term strategies for decreasing the anthropogenic forcing of climate change. A special focus of this talk will be small synthetic, high production-volume halogenated compounds. These compounds have the potential to act as strong GHGs. Ongoing research concentrates on the atmospheric chemistry and environmental fate of these chemical species.

Where: Calit2 Auditorium
Speaker: Dr. Dan E. Arvizu, Director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory - U.S. Department of Energy

The world must transform its current energy systems on a global scale. In order to help achieve this transformation, we must first define our desired energy "end state" of the furture. We know it must be carbon-neutral, sustainable, and supportive of our national securty and economic vitality. Next, we must reduce the risk around new technology development, and create an economic/business environment that encourages energy innovation. And finally, clean energy technologies must be commercialized far quicker, and deployed at a much larger scale, than ever before. We must be committed to achieving transformational change in order to create a new energy future that is secure and sustainable. This will require not just advanced energy technology development and rapid commercialization, but stable policies, responsive markets, and visionary - yet programatic - leadership worldwide. Dr. Arvizu will discuss these topics and also provide a status report on the portfolio of renewable energy and energy efficiency technology pathways available today, and what is on the horizon for the future. If you would like more information or have questions about the event, please contact Asli Ozguz at (949) 824-8546 or aozguz@uci.edu.
